The 10 Most Important Lessons for a lifetime!

Article By Sireesha MK, from IUeMagazine
1. A for Ant!

If the person mentoring you says, it's A for Ant, Believe it is! You might have learnt it's A for Apple and not Ant which is also true but A for Ant applies as well. Don't lose your mental energy in arguing and justifying why it is so. Your Mentor is wise enough to teach you. Believe in him and move forward. You will realize in the course of journey, why he said so.

2. Can I help you?

Not all who walk into your life might be your friends/soul mates ( I still wonder what that is) best buddies. You will meet many like dew who will at times make you blue. You wouldn't be able to see - through, be wise enough to unscrew. Haven't you got a clue? Make friends with a few. (Sorry for the terrible poetry). What I am trying to say is, Connect with the World, Network with a million, Help a thousand, Stay answerable to a ten.

3. Learn - Un-learn - Relearn

The title says it all. At all points of time, have the readiness to learn when you are taught. Be more ready to un-learn when said so and re-learn with the same spirit. Light is a wave, Light is a particle. Light has a dual nature. The definitions changed with time. So how many planets do we have in the Solar system? :)

4. I want to be a Jack of all Trades.

If this is you, let me tell you, I am also like you. There is always a right time for anything to be done. You might have a hundred interests, my friend, but what needs to be done now is more important than what can be done. Keep up to your priorities and commitments first. Do Delay Dump Delegate. One of the 4 D's should be the answer when faced with a question.

5. Where am I heading?

If you have ever played a game of Mario, you can relate well. Anyways, let me explain. When you are playing a game, what matters is, to reach the destination, no matter what comes your way. Ducks, ants, bricks, fire balls, arrows and the rest coming your way really don't matter as what stays in your mind continuously is to win the game. Similarly in this game of life, it is very important to have a clear purpose in mind. It's when the Goal is clear is when your mind aligns to it and the heart is ready to believe, your actions will speak. Let no thorns irritate you, stop you or disappoint you.

6. I want the egg to hatch TODAY?

No matter what you do, certain things take time. Have patience. Your work might not be paid off immediately but it will certainly be paid off someday. Give your best and be not concerned about the results. Your work will fetch it's reward when the right time comes. No work goes waste. Someday the egg will hatch.

7. "I don't want to rise today. I am so bored of coming up every day" says the SUN.

Will that be ok with you? If yes, drop me a mail! If no, read on. Each one of us have been bestowed with a responsibility. We need to be committed in fulfilling them. You are counted on for a particular task to be done. Make sure you do it.

8. E-X-P-E-C-T-A-T-I-O-N

Have expectations out of yourself and not from others. Be responsible and accountable to finish what is given. No one can walk your path. You need to carry yourself when you fall and walk it through. Do not expect people to lift you through the desert. Face the storm and be a strong sailor. If lucky enough you might find a voice which might give you a direction.

9. A pinch of Salt

A pinch of Salt ...can disappoint your taste-buds, spoil your mood, and bring down your bank balance and a lot more :) When you're working in a team, the most important factor that takes the highest place is Communication and Coordination. More than the work you do, what matters is your report. You might spoil the recipe of suc-cess if your report of how much was done was incorrect.

10. H for Happiness

I need a break to fill in happiness. I need to go for a vacation. I need to spend time with friends. I need to be alone. Good Luck. You are digging your own well. It's when you find happiness in your work is when you will be the happiest person in the world. 75% of a person's life consists of Work. If you cannot enjoy what you're doing, you can never be happy. Love yourself and live life!

Success strikes, Where failure has struck!

Each of us strive to become successful. But the fact is none of us can avoid failures. But, all of us can definitely avoid remaining failures. You become a failure the moment you accept it as the final outcome of the activity you are performing. Its like a game, the initial set of outcomes shall always carry a mojority of failures, and only then success shall follow. So your job is to happily embrace failure and ask for the next outcome and next and next until the desired success touches your feet.

But it happens that you touch one destination in your life, you rejoice and you immediately set your next milestones. So does it mean you have overcome all possible failures now. No, definitely not. Your new set of failures for helping your new level of success to reach you, will start meeting you.

So, lets understand that there is nothing called as failure, its just a learning experience and the required tool to achieve the desired success that you need to achieve. Desiring too much is not bad, but realise that should be accompanied with equal amount of patience and efforts to be input in gathering all the failures that will come before the actual success gets realised.

Hence always step up step by step. People say, one who tries to take a leap falls down, but one takes it step by step makes it really big. It simply reflects the capacity of handling failures. This capacity also increases as you keep growing in your life. And hence, a time arrives where you do start taking leaps without actually having to fall or perish, owing to the fact that the ability to embracing failures becomes high and without a sigh you invite the next one, then the next one until success strikes you.

Hence remember Success strikes, where failure has struck!

95% of the start-ups fail! Now according to the above write up it is evident, that people behind those start-ups fail to run through the patience it requires to see the extent of growth they desire to see. After some time they tend to sit down with a belief, it would never happen for them, or get content with however their businesses & life is doing!

Inspiration Drives Innovation!

Man has been the most creative animal amongst the fraternity. If there had to be only one word to describe the human nature and the way it moves forward We would put a million dollars at stake on the word - "Innovation" or "Change" and still be sure, We would have all odds in the gamble in our favour.

Innovation is the root for all progress, Change is the key to growth. Its change that drives mass with greater momentum until it finally subsides and reaches an equilibrium. Further change takes it to higher momentum.

We the IU team, Suggest entrepreneurs to be Change experts, Before the momentum can subside itself, introduce changes. Change can be in the product, in the company environment, work culture, symbol, color combination, marketing strategy, product line, celebrations, new offices, new markets that you open , changes in your website, new blogs, new clients etc. But CHANGE.

Each change will bring in a definite amount of momentum. At one point your business idea will capture a speed which you always wanted to see and go beyond the clutches of gravity into the space. Then if minimum things are assured, right risk calculations are done, system is followed company shall glide through the progress.

But today its a competitive world, the earlier paragraph holds true for very giant corporations if just being there is their concern, but in case you strive to be the best (which should be your motto of life) then CHANGE is must even then.

But Innovation & Change are something that are a direct result of an individual's creative mind, which are a direct result of upsurge of adrenaline rush which he gets due to the inspiration he derives from his dreams, or accomplishments that he wants to make. The root lies in inspiration, SEEK IT and YOU SHALL BLOOM!

We advise you - to take inspiration from everything you see around you, right from a small child playing to a BIG high rise building around you. Remember a walk-in restaurant inspired the Mega chain of Mc Donalds. We are loving it. They are CHANGING it!

Inevitable qualities for a leader!

These are a few qualities for a leader to possess, if he/she wants to be a quality leader. Leadership is all about leading your team to greater heights, which happens by elevating yourself to heights.

Most leaders are bothered by this question, am I leading well. Mentors are surely the greatest help we could have got to solve this question for ourselves. But self-evaluation is as important as having a mentor. The Following is list of qualities which will help you evaluate yourself. Mark yourself monthly/biweekly against each of these qualities (out of 10). This system would help you if you ensure you are honest to yourself. It will orient your self-analysis and give it a foundation.

The following article also contains a slight hint on acquiring these qualities. Its against "Howto:" under each quality.

Qualities a leader must possess :

1. Analytical- A great leader, must have great analytical skills. He must be able to anticipate outcomes, analyse the problems, offer different strokes for different folks. What misses the eye of most is caught by a great leader.
Howto: To develop this just spend a little more time understanding things, than jumping to conclusions too quickly. Also ensure you keep solving some puzzles. That keeps your brain cells active.

2. Self-driven - A great leader leads himself. Does not need a motivator always. He knows his purpose clear and can walk as many extra miles, to achieve it.
Howto: To be self driven, Your purpose needs to clear and you need to reinforce in yourself, infinite number of times.

3. Aggression - A great leader does not always pamper his team. He knows "spare the rod, and spoil the child". But over aggression is also harmful. You need to strike a balance.
Howto: Anything that you can pretend for first 30 days, becomes your habit. If you have never been aggresive before, observe successful people who possess aggression. (It needs to be used only when required)

4. Assertiveness - A great leader is assertive in his communication.
Howto:Know your points clearly. Know your objectives clearly. Be honest. If you do these you will automatically be assertive.

5. Domineering - A great leader knows how to get things done from his team.
Howto: Its important that a leader commands respect for his commands. Never demand. You need to be domineering if you need to push your team out of comfort zone.

6. Self-Confident - Confident about his strengths and ideas.
Howto: This comes with clarity about what you sell. Know your product and the benefits of the product without slightest of ambiguity. Also understand your target market clearly.

7. Outspoken - A great leader should not be reserved. Reserved people make no leaders.
Howto: Start interacting more with strangers. Start listening more and communicate to people you know. Slowly once you get into the tune of placing your opinion in front of people without fear, you will have this quality.

8. Warm & Friendly - Professionals also want friends after all. Nothing great if a person can find a friend in a leader itself. A great leader knows to draw the line between being too friendly and too professional.
Howto: Be yourself with your team sometimes, you will make a great friend.

9. Chamelion like (in a positive way)- you must know how to adapt to situations in seconds. Hence being carried away by a particular mood for too long is not the trait of a great leader.
Howto: Upto the reader to observe and learn.

10. Good with numbers - A great leader cannot be weak at calculations. Accounts are the foundation stone of business. (ofcourse after people)
Howto: Practice daily accounting. Practice playing with numbers.

11. Problem Solver - A great leader can tackle problems like breaking open an egg. Its that easy for him. Just understand the right place to hit.
Howto: Start solving the problems of your people. Solve your own first ofcourse.

13. Flexible (not rigid) - A great leader does not keep his work timings rigid. You need to be sometimes available at odd times.
Howto: Break your mental barriers of time availability. Have true care for your team's progress.

14. Having a high sense of urgency - A great leader is not a slow coach. You need to be quick. The world is moving fast. You never cook today, and eat the following week. The issues in companies/organisations need to be sorted out then and there. Sales calls need to be made immediately. A delayed follow up call is surely a sale lost.
Howto: Keep reminding yourself about this everytime you are into activity.

15. Independent - Dependent people are not leaders. Dependent person can only lead until his source is actively leading him. Everything collapses once source collapses. Independent leaders are FIGHTERS, they know their role and visions.
Howto: Start being self dependent. Learn from mentors do it yourself. Picture yourself as an independent leader, and start practicising from, right now.

16. Strong Willed - Will power is very strong in a great leader. The ability to take decisions and stick to them until they are proven the best, is called will power. The ability to make things happen, not wait for them to happen.
Howto: YOU NEEDS GUTS. Strong willpower is inside all of us. PULL IT OUT!

17. Higher than average level street smart people - A leader should be really street smart to tackle out those extra intelligent people in the market who will try posing problems for you. Also be smart enough to elude the problems created by these people in the team who are hypocrits. Awareness about the world in general in all different fields is highly appreciated.
Howto: Just remember - "IF U R'NT UPDATED, U'LL GET OUTDATED"

18. Passionate about everything he does - A great leader can take his team through any kind of phases of the organisation/company, because passion has the power to glide things smoothly even on a nasty tide.
Howto: People love to be with people who can fill energy in them. Love what you do.

19. Energetic & ever enthusiastic - A great leader must act like a energy booster for the team. Every flight needs fuel. A leader is an infinite reservoir of positive energy for the team.
Howto: Surround yourself with such people. Be a person who follows his heart. Dont be affected by the mocking and comments of others. Know yourself. If there is a point doing something, its in doing it well and enthusiastically.

20. Possesses relaxed passion - Dont get too excited about things.
Howto: Do your homework on this. Relaxed passion is something where you are not desparate for praise neither vulnerable to comments of people.

21. Team Player - To lead a team you need to understand its dynamics, and hence a great leader is always a great team player.
Howto: Involve in the activities on the field with your team every now and then. Remember "Never do things, for your team Do it with them"

Patience - A great leader knows, Rome was not built in a day.
Howto: You are already having patience. Thats what got you to read this line.

I wish you a great future in leading. May you lead your team to the highest of the heights.

This article is the product of my journey of leading a versatile network today. My network has a huge diversity in terms of occupational backgrounds of people, their age groups, their intellect levels, place of stay etc. But the best part is we have a common vision, the growth of computer literacy of the country. We are all hardcore promoters of online computer education.(I lead an approximate active leaders team of 300+ people - through whom i manage a network of more than 6300 people).

PS : the qualities have not been listed in any order of importance. They are all important. All of them together complete a leader. If you are lacking a few of them, or are low on some of them. Its not a worry. Atleast you have got oriented and now you know what your strengths and weakness are.

Apply MINIMAX formula: "Maximise your strengths and minimise your weaknesses"

Hope this post helps you lead your team to success. Promote it to all the people you want to see grow in Life, and become leaders.
